Ralph Vaughan Williams |
It's All Saints today - a chance to bring out "For all the saints" and sing it with suitable fervour and enthusiasm.
"For All the Saints" was written as a processional hymn by Bishop How. The hymn was first printed in Hymns for Saint's Days, and Other Hymns, by Earl Nelson in 1864 and the text is sometimes therefore attributed to him.The hymn was originally sung to the melody Sarum, by Victorian composer Joseph Barnby until the publication of the English Hymnal in 1906. This used a new setting by Ralph Vaughan Williams which he called Sine Nomine (literally, "without name") and this is almost always the only tune now used for this text. It remains one of the finest hymn tunes given to us though a certain amount of endurance is needed if all the verses are sung!
