Via the Diocesan Office, I have received the following from Richard Jones, BibleLands Regional Representative about a world record attempt (Guiness Book of Records) for Carol Singing. It would seem that a Carol Service could be used as part of this but, before committing to participate, do read the Rules on their website carefully. The various conditions needed to make this a record attempt are not immediately straightforward. However, it might make an excellent way of engaging with your wider local community were your church to fancy taking this on.
World Record Attempt for Carol Singing
I would be grateful if you could include this invitation to churches to join a world record attempt at carol singing. On the 18th December 2011 at 7pm churches and individuals up and down the country will take part in an attempt to smash the current World Record for the largest number of people singing carols together across multiple locations. We need 15,000 people to join in for 15mins of carolling. But before we can get 15,000 people taking part we need churches to get involved. All a church needs to do is commit to be open at that time, have musicians lead the singing, provide the songs sheets which we’ll supply and have a nominated person to click people in and record the attendance.
This attempt is a wonderful way to create an easy environment to invite non-churched people take part. It is also a great way of raising the profile of any regular church or carol service you would ordinarily hold on that night, as the attempt can be a part of that event.
               Churches can register at http://www.christmasstarts.com/worldrecord.php
